PD Autonomous Drone - Drone Desk

The Sunny Isles Beach Police Department’s Drone Division was the first law enforcement agency in the state of Florida to implement a fully operational, non-beta Drone as First Responder program. The department’s innovative program has been featured in The Wall Street Journal, as well as national and local news outlets, highlighting its impact on emergency response times, officer safety, and public safety.

Our Drone Division is comprised of nine sworn personnel who have completed and earned their FAA Part 107 remote pilot certifications. These officers are trained to operate drones safely, effectively, and in compliance with federal regulations and within the guidelines of Florida State Statutes.

The Drone Division uses Skydio X10 first responder drones equipped with thermal and infrared imaging to quickly respond to emergency situations and provide an aerial view for a variety of scenarios including:

  • Improving emergency response times and officer safety by providing real-time aerial views before officers arrive on scene

  • Searching for missing persons

  • Locating fleeing suspects and stolen vehicles

  • Assisting in medical emergency response

  • Flotation device deployment for water rescue
