The City Commission has taken the first step toward changing how motorized scooters are regulated across the City. At the February 19 meeting, the City Commission approved the first reading of an ordinance amending the City's Code of Ordinances to reflect new safety regulations.

The proposed ordinance provides the following changes to the existing Code:

  •  An age restriction of 16 years old or greater to ride a scooter within the City limits.
  •  Requirement for all individuals 16 years old or greater to have a government issued ID when riding a motorized scooter.
  •  A modification of the fine schedule for all violations in this section to be $250 for a first offense and $500 for all subsequent violations.

These changes are in response to resident feedback received through the City’s Motorized Scooter Survey. The ordinance will be up for a second reading at the City Commission meeting on March 19. If adopted, there will be an educational outreach period lasting through the end of the school year, after which enforcement will begin.
