SUNNY ISLES BEACH, Fla. – The Sunny Isles Beach City Commission has approved an ordinance strengthening the safety regulations relating to motorized scooter use across the City.

The ordinance provides the following changes to the existing Code:

  • An age restriction of 16 years or greater to ride a scooter within the Sunny Isles Beach city limits
  • Requirement for all individuals 16 years old or greater to carry a government-issued ID when riding a motorized scooter
  • A fine of $250 for a first offense and $500 for all subsequent violations

Citations will begin to be issued on June 1, following an educational campaign.

This ordinance reflects the City’s commitment to a pedestrian-first approach, prioritizing safety, accessibility, and walkability for all residents and visitors. These changes are also in response to resident feedback obtained through a citywide survey that drew nearly 1,900 respondents, as well as two public events where residents were given the opportunity to voice their opinions on potential changes to motorized scooter regulations. The results of that survey and more information on the new ordinance are available at sibfl.gov/scootsafe.
