The Sunny Isles Beach City Commission has approved an ordinance strengthening the safety regulations relating to e-bike use across the City. An e-bike is defined as a bicycle or tricycle with fully operable pedals, a seat or saddle, a maximum speed of 28 miles per hour, and an electric motor of less than 750 watts.
The ordinance provides the following changes to the existing Code:
Riders must be 16 years or older to ride an e-bike within the Sunny Isles Beach city limits.
Riders must carry a government-issued ID when operating an e-bike.
E-bikes are prohibited from operating on sidewalks within the City.
Violations will result in a fine of $250 for a first offense and $500 for all subsequent violations.
Citations will begin to be issued on August 16, following an educational campaign.
This ordinance reflects the City’s commitment to a pedestrian-first approach, prioritizing safety, accessibility, and walkability for all residents and visitors. It comes just months after the City Commission approved a similar ordinance restricting the use of motorized scooters to riders ages 16 or older and requiring that riders carry a government-issued ID. Those changes were in response to resident feedback obtained through a citywide survey that drew nearly 1,900 respondents, as well as two public events where residents were given the opportunity to voice their opinions on potential changes to motorized scooter regulations.
