On August 7, 2025, the City of Sunny Isles Beach celebrated its inaugural Adaptive Beach Day. The idea for this new event was sparked by a resident’s advocacy and civic engagement, prompting me to consider how the City could respond to her concerns. After months of trial and error, Adaptive Beach Day was born. It was designed to encourage greater inclusivity and ensure that individuals of all ages and abilities could enjoy the sun and surf together.
Held at Samson Oceanfront Park, the day brought joy and excitement to a diverse group of participants, ranging in age from 4 to 74. The compassionate organization Surfers Healing played a central role in the event, introducing participants to gentle waves and the experience of surfing on giant boards adapted for their needs. With the help of trained instructors, attendees were able to feel the thrill of the waves regardless of being on the autism spectrum and regardless of their physical challenges.
Surfers Healing guided each person according to their comfort level. It was beautiful.
Parents and family members cheered on their loved ones as they took to the water. One father I spoke to was holding back tears as he watched his son step into the ocean for the first time in his life. Thanks to all who made the event possible, our first Adaptive Beach Day was a great success and exceeded my expectations. It not only promoted physical activity but also fostered a sense of belonging among participants and their families. While on the shoreline, some asked if we would do this again. The answer is a resounding YES! I made sure it stayed in the budget. We must continue to work towards greater inclusivity. All deserve to experience the best that our city has to offer.
