The holiday season is a time for celebration, joy, and giving. As we decorate our homes and gather with our loved ones, it’s crucial to prioritize safety. As your Chief of Police, my foremost concern is the well-being of our community. I want you and your family to enjoy a safe and festive season. Here are some important steps to help you celebrate safely:

If you are traveling, ask a trustworthy neighbor or family member to keep an eye on your home. Also, if you’d like our Police Department to schedule a Watch Order for your residence while you are away, please fill out the form at sibfl.gov/watchorder.

• As you dress your home in holiday décor, make sure your lights are fire resistant and don’t overload electrical outlets.
• Make the 9 p.m. Routine your nightly ritual by locking your doors and windows.
• If you’re heading out for the evening, leave some lights and the TV on to give the appearance that somebody is home.
• When out shopping, keep all items out of sight to deter potential theft – remember, out of sight, out of mind. Also, be aware of your surroundings and avoid carrying large amounts of cash; paying with a credit card is often safer. If shopping with children, teach them to approach a store clerk or security guard if you become separated.
• Safeguard your delivered gifts by considering tracking your packages, opting for delivery alerts, or have them sent to a secure location.
• Criminals sometimes pose as couriers delivering gifts, be cautious when accepting a package. 
• It’s not uncommon for people to try to take advantage of others’ generosity during the holidays by going door-to-door for charitable donations when there’s no charity involved. Ask for identification and find out how the funds will be used. Scammers are very creative and make it so enticing.
• Remember that law enforcement agencies will never call you demanding money.
