City of Sunny Isles Beach Launches Smart Parking Pilot Program
Published on October 06, 2025
The City of Sunny Isles Beach is launching a new pilot program in partnership with CivicSmart and Genetec’s CurbSense platform to enhance parking compliance through innovative technology.
Throughout the month of October, the City will be testing a CurbSense vehicle detection sensor to help improve the efficiency and effectiveness of parking enforcement. The system uses a bollard-mounted camera to detect when a vehicle enters or exits a parking space and incorporates license plate recognition (LPR) software to identify vehicles.
Integrated with the PayByPhone system, CurbSense automatically notifies parking enforcement officers when a vehicle has overstayed its paid time or parked without payment. The system pinpoints the exact location of a potential violation and sends it to officers via an AutoISSUE handheld device, allowing for a faster response and streamlined citation process.
CurbSense can automatically detect several types of parking violations, including:
- Parking in no-parking zones
- Parking near fire hydrants
- Parking in handicap spaces without a valid permit
- Parking at an expired meter
To support enforcement and transparency, the system also provides local courts with photo evidence, including the vehicle’s license plate, time of entry and exit, and duration of stay.
Results from other cities have shown promising outcomes, increasing officer productivity and significantly reducing the time required to travel between violations. Compliance rates also increase within the first year of implementation.
The City will evaluate the effectiveness of the pilot throughout October to determine future implementation strategies throughout other City lots and garages.
